Both Apple and Google require app developers who use in-app purchasing to pay 30% of their earnings from those purchases in fees. We want that money to be used to support local bookstores instead, so this extra step is required.
UPDATE: As of May 2025, Apple has been forced to loosen the regulations for app developers around initiating external purchases from inside their apps. This means, as of version 1.1.9, Apple users are now able to initiate ebook purchases directly from inside the app without having to take any extra steps, and without Bookshop.org being required to pay a 30% profit share. Unfortunately this situation has not changed for Android users, who will need to continue purchasing using the original flow.
